Wolf Kahlen
Tibet/Mongolia/China Video Documentaries
This is a series of exiting life documents (starting in 1985) of verbally los horizons of by now spoiled, formerly hidden Himalayan countries,
seen through the eyes of the artist Wolf Kahlen, who at the same time has made
several important discoveries of never before recorded, or by Westerners even seen,
rituals, architectures, bridges or personalities of Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhism.
The film about Serkong Rinpoche (1988) for example was, to our knowledge, the very first live
recording of the events of life and death and the reincarnation of a high lama.
The ritual of Breaking the Stone for example, was another of Kahlen's discoveries for tibetolo-
gists (1988), as were the research on a non-corregating iron-chain-bridge
and a revolutionary architecture in the very West of Tibet (1988).
These films of extraordinary character (extremely long shooting sequences...) have been tried
to copy by journalists and others in vain since. The exitement "of the right of the first night" is
unrepeatable, even if technology has made filming today easier and more glamorous.
